1950s Dress - McCall's 5471
I started this project as over Spring Break (of 2019) and finished it in June…of 2019. (I know…I know, I’m blogging it almost a year after completing it. You gotta love me though right?? :D )
Anyway…off that rabbit trail and back to the fun stuff.
I purchased this pattern on the We Sew Retro Buy, Sell & Trade for just a few dollars. The pattern is McCall’s 5471 from 1960. If you are confused the 50s style went into the early 60s starting to lose it’s height in about 1963ish.
The fabric is from Fabric Recycles in Overland Park, Kansas. I was supposed to be there buying fabric for a Construction 2 project (Another project not blogged) but was immediately taken by the Japanese art type print.
I painstakingly measured the seam allowances on the back seam to get it to match up. It’s not flawless but pretty close either way I’m still very proud of it!
To eliminate having to do the exact same thing on the front (and with it being more noticable. I chose to cut the front on the fold instead of having a seam like the pattern called for. This made the facing construction more difficult but it was still a beautiful result.
Oh, and there’s supposed to be a collar but was so focused sewing the bodice…I completely forgot about it! So…now I have a collar pieces that don’t go to any dress. So maybe I need to make a red or black dress and make it a contrast collar! Could be cute!
But at least I remembered the pockets!!
Happy Sewing!
