Marigold Wool

Marigold Wool

This project has been a year in the making… I (Jewel) started the blouse and skirt ensemble almost a year ago! But stalled and let them both hang around as a UFO (UnFinished Object) until September!

The main marigold fabric is a wool/polyester blend Kimberly purchased at Hancock fabrics (before they closed) for a wool circle skirt. The pattern we finally chose is quickly becoming a “Tried and True” pattern; Simplicity 1200.

I remember vividly why the skirt ended up as a UFO, I got this notion that I should hand-hem the skirt!

Uhhhh…first ever hand-sewn hem…on a wool full skirt?? Dumb idea, Jewel!

I really set myself up for failure there and I suppose the blouse ended there after I abandoned the skirt because why make a blouse without the matching skirt?

Honestly, the skirt would not have been finished as soon as it is…except a life changing three words.

Industrial Blind Hem Machine!!!!

Okay, so technically that’s four. But seriously, with the lab available to me at school and how simple the industrial blind-hem machine is (AND how gorgeous the hem ends up being!!) why wait any longer?

Kimberly is glad with it being complete and even finds times to wear it living in Dallas. (oh..uhh yep that happened. That’s a upcoming blog post… shhhh)

The main blouse fabric came from a vintage pencil skirt that was even too small for our sister Tiffany. It was tiny, so this is one time where I allowed myself to reuse a vintage garment. (Majority of the time it hurts my vintage loving self to use a vintage garment that could be worn.)

I cut the back first to get the best plaid matching possible. On the third time restitching the zipper to get it to perfectly match up…I decided to let it go. Especially since the ripping out the stitches wasn’t treating the fabric the best.

Used the blind hem machine on the blouse hem as well! 😍

This blouse is becoming a TNT (tried ‘n’ true) pattern for me to make for Kimberly. …

…Because it’s the only blouse pattern I’ve added a Full Bust Adjustment (FBA) to. (The average bust cup pattern companies draft to are a B cup. The reason larger busted ladies struggle to get a good fit.) But that’s one of the reasons I’m in Fashion Design school. To learn to draft pattern to ladies measurements for the best fit.

Kimberly here! Since this post was drafted almost two years ago, I’ve worn these pieces often — typically just the skirt but as a combo as well.
