Sewing Diary: Entry I
Hello Friends,
It’s been awhile since I shared a sewing post and I thought I’d let you know what I’ve been working on.
Not a lot.
Since March, I’ve sewn quite a few masks for my family but not a lot else. I’m not sure if it’s giant sewing fatigue still from the end of May with my fashion show collection. Or if (not sewing) is a coping mechanism with still not having a job and other 2020 event related stressors that a lot of us can relate to.
I am attempting to sew some Christmas gifts for the season so hopefully you will see those soon. A reusable gift for Kimberly, (Blogged HERE) some dresses for donating (See HERE), a dress for my niece and a backpack (by request) for TaMera. I’m forcing myself to get through these projects but none of them are women’s clothing which is where my heart (usually) is.
But lately…my heart hasn’t been in any kind of sewing. Which is very confusing to me but it is what it is.
Another sewing related stressor is my fabric stash. UGH…how did it get soooo big. I’ve been trying to focus on going through and donating what doesn’t bring me joy/I won’t ever choose to sew…which is a process.
So far, 60 patterns have left the pattern stash.
7 2/3 yards went to be donated and a (rough estimate) of 1 1/2 yards of scraps and bits to be discarded.
As well as, two paper bags full of fabric that I didn’t measure. I was nervous I’d come up with a “someday” project and it’d go back into the stash. 😬
That’s not a lot in the grand scheme of things but I’m really excited about what I was able to get through. A lot of the stash has sentimental value; like the “inheritance” fabric from my Grandmother I speak of HERE. (Which ended up being closer to 120 yards.) Other fabric is so unique I can’t let it go…or buying new fabric is just so expensive!
I’ve also been mulling over the idea of sewing plus size, vintage inspired, one-of-kind-pieces from the stash to sell on Etsy. Which would be a lot of work…but I am trained in how to do it. So, it’s just actually sitting down to decide on silhouettes, creating the patterns and then sewing the garments. Sounds simple in writing but we’re talking hours and hours of work for a single garment. Do you think it's something I should consider? Let me know in the comments.
Well, I’ve about caught you up on everything. Talk soon…time to go fill out another job application. 😬
