Greek Tacos
My absolute favorite recipe using ground meat that isn’t hamburgers! Greek “tacos” with Mediterranean “pico de gallo”! Top it with readymade dairy free tzatziki sauce or with (my preference) a homemade tahini dressing.
Greek Taco Meat
2 lbs. ground beef (if using ground turkey, add a little oil to the pan)
1 medium sweet onion, finely minced
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon minced garlic
salt and pepper to taste
1 tube (or one mini can) tomato paste
2 tablespoons wine (use whatever you have on hand/prefer — white and red both taste fine!)
In a large frying pan, combine beef, onion, oregano, garlic, salt, and pepper, and cook until beef has browned — breaking up chunks as it cooks.
Add tomato paste and wine and bring to a gentle simmer. Serve over pita bread (BFree Foods makes a yummy gluten free/vegan pita)
Mediterranean “Pico de Gallo” Relish
3 Roma tomatoes, insides removed, diced
1/2 - 1 English cucumber, washed and diced
1 small sweet onion, diced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon wine or red wine vinegar
black pepper
Combine all ingredients, mix gently and let sit in the fridge to let the flavors come together. (At least an hour is recommended)
Serve with tortilla chips or over Greek tacos!
Tahini Sauce
1/2 cup tahini paste
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon minced garlic (I usually add more for a stronger flavor)
1/4 cup filtered water
1/4 teaspoon salt
Mix all ingredients together and let chill in the fridge until ready to serve. Tastes best the next day!
